Top places to eat in San Miguel de Allende in Mexico

A couple of days ago I created this article about my ultimate hotspot list of San Miguel de Allende. Now I’ll post a little addition to that; here’s where to go for food!

Geek & Coffee

Set in an old factory from the 20s, the giant building of Fabrica La Aurora hosts a LOT of galleries, with art, gift shops, jewellery and photos. Although a little outside the city center I’d say this ensemble is really worth your time.

After half an hour of walking around in the fabric I figured it was a bit much to soak it all up. There’s just so much art to see. There are many (fancy) restaurants in the building, but in the garden there’s this little cafe called Geek & Coffee, which is great for a lush break. Dogs are welcome too and especially kids will love it in here because of the many duckies in the pond.

This spot is also popular among digital nomads as the wifi’s strong and the staff just love techy stuff. They are right there to help you out with any geeky problem.

Mercado del Carmen

A food court! With a great ambiance too. From Peruvian food, to vegan burgers, Nutella crepes and sushi, there’s a lot of great stuff to order at Mercado del Carmen. The place looks rather new and upscale, but it’s really affordable and the vibe is just right in here too.

The only disadvantage of food courts – in my opinion – is that you end up ordering way more than you would in a restaurant. But ah well… it’s difficult to leave Mexico without any additional weight anyway.

La Azotea

Located next to the square, La Azotea has both a super nice patio and terrace. Come in here for a drink around 6ish, when the sun goes down. In the back of the terrace you have a great view on the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel!

Mama Mia

If La Azotea is packed, next doors Mama Mia is another great option for a drink.

Although the food is decent in here as well I wasn’t really wowed personally. However I would recommend the place if only for their lush patio and terrace.

Dôce-18 Concept House SMA

This is an upscale shopping area / gallery / food court, located in a completely renovated old building right around the corner of the main square. The building of Dôce-18 Concept House SMA is a bit of a maze and clearly this place is meant for the bigger wallets, but even if you’re on a budget it’s worth a little look. I think most of the people are being lookie-loos in here anyway.

Funny enough, in the back of the ‘house’ there’s a little food court where you can order a burger and pizza if you need a break from all the window-shopping. Of all the places mentioned this food court is not per se the best place to settle down, but I wanted to include it in the list anyway, because you certainly should visit this place.

La Mezclaria

Simple, small and elegant; that’s how I’d describe this place located a little on the hill of Calle Correa. La Mezclaria serves Mexican food with a twist with great cocktails on the side. Clearly people love it as usually their small place is packed at the end of the evening. So come in time!
