A day of walking around the charming town of Posadas, Argentina

Sometimes you arrive at a place and it just totally surprises you in a positive sense. Before arriving in Posadas I expected to find an obscure border city in the east of Argentina, but boy was I wrong. It turns out to be quite a lovely and lush city, with broad avenues, bohemian streets and a small city feeling.

For many tourists, Posadas is a thankful stop on the way to the magnificent waterfalls of Iguacu. As I had already been there years ago, I was mainly interested in how life would be in Argentina far from the pampas. You really do feel a difference over here compared to the rest of Argentina.

Posadas is the capital of the sub tropical Misiones province. It is spread out along the Paraná river and opposite the city of Encarnación in Paraguay. Posadas had hot and humid weather year round and it’s surroundings are full of red earth and contrastingly lush vegetation. There’s isn’t much to do really, apart from just strolling the streets and just soaking up the daily city life. Most of the squares and churches have been designed by the jesuits, centuries ago.

If you’re looking for a nice lunch, visit mellow Zoco or go to Havanna (both nearby the main square and yes the last one comes with double ‘n’) for your daily shot of sugar. On Saturdays wander the quirky, bohemian street of Fleming (Bajada Vieja) for some artisanal cakes and gifts and musical tones. The street in itself is something to behold too, since it’s adorned with a lot of funky street art.

In the evening, walk with the locals along the long the costanera, the boulevard and the city’s pride. It goes all the way around the old city center and apart from the lovely views across the bay on Paraguay, you can also enjoy your time at the small beach of Balneario El Brete. Break down in between to drink your mate (or check out the ‘galeria del mate’ neat the Puerto Viejo if you want to learn all about the local obsession) – and check out the pinky sky above Paraguay, the all time favourite activity on Sunday evening.

Here’re some impressions of the city and what better way to start Posada’s gallery with a mate picture!
