A blog with a tiny travel dog

PHOTOS: The best of Buenos Aires

I’ve lived in Buenos Aires for about a month in May 2018. I didn’t plan to do so, it just happened to be convenient. Honestly the idea of staying in a big city at first sounded rather appalling to me (because crowds, busy lifestyle, hop on hop off tourist buses, pickpocketing, lots of traffic). But my conclusions after a couple of weeks in BA is that I think you can’t but love this place. If you try a bit.

I find it hard to explain what’s so special about it in particularly. The city from the outside looks rather massive and grey. Yet, while wandering around you discover it’s a very manageable one, with a lot of quirky details all around. The metro system is great, there are barely traffic jams (quite a miracle in such a big hub!) and it’s even possible to bike around (a big plus for a Dutchie). Best of all is probably is that every neighbourhood oozes a special – often European – vibe. Sometimes you have a feeling you’re walking in Berlin, the next it feels like Paris.

There’s Palermo Soho with its street art and hipster burger bars, Recoleta with its uptown houses and high-end museums, Villa Crespo with its fancy shops, Colegiales with its pet-friendly and lush avenues, San Nicolas with its many cafes and business-like vibe, Belgrano with its entertaining Chinatown, San Telmo with its enormous Sunday flea market, Puerto Madero with its lovely evening lights and so on and on.

All in all, after a month it was hard to leave BA, Palermo in particular. Although I’d seen most of the highlights, it felt like I hadn’t experienced it all yet. So it was then that I also came to realize that without a lifetime in a city you’ll probably never really understand it. But I’m grateful for that little glimpse that I got, the people I got to know, the stuff I learned and my days of endlessly walking around. That little glimpse for sure was a great one.

I hope I can guide you around the city (perhaps on a road down memory lane) with these 32 shots, that might give you an impression of the different vibes of the neighbourhoods. As I stayed in both Palermo Soho and Colegiales, most of the pictures are made over there, but other highlights are included too of course. Bon viaje!
