A blog with a tiny travel dog

PHOTOS: Rose-red desert magic in Wadi Rum, Jordan

My trip to Jordan was my first big one outside of Europe. Apart from the big leap I took, it felt also like taking a journey back into time. The Roman temples of Jerash, the rock-hewn Nabataean city of Petra, the Crusader castles of Karak and Shobak, the Byzantine mosaics of Madaba, the salty waters of the Dead Sea; the history and diversity is pretty intense for such a small country and one just can’t feel but tiny in this magnificent landscapes.

In Wadi Rum I got all the Lawrence of Arabia-feels. While entering the huge sweeping desert it’s like entering an ancient land. Vast panoramas are punctuated by the mountains and huge granite rocks sticking straight out of the red and yellow sand. It’s interesting to see how the sand blends from one area to another. Apart from the many colours of the place, it’s also the ancient petroglyphs, the bedouin people and the millions of stars at night that make this place so so incredible.

Wadi Rum has an other worldly quality about it. Therefore it’s not so peculiar that many outer space movies have been filmed here. The Martian for example. We stayed at one of the tents camps of the Bedouins, that were conservatively built into the area. It felt like there was no one else out there for hundreds of miles and the colours of the sand changed when the night set in. To see what you can encounter in the desert, have a look a these pictures my sister Marion made!
