How to spend an afternoon in downtown Boise, Idaho

Totally exhausted after a week in the wilderness of Yellowstone and Grand Teton we landed in Boise. I couldn’t even think of three association keywords when I thought of Idaho, let alone of it’s capital city. But right now I’d say refreshing, easy-going and upbeat. Okay, that sounds like some lame government kind-of slogan, but Boise honestly charges you, yet without being overwhelming or pushy.

Its downtown streets are full of surprises, although this might have to do with the fact that I was expecting none. The best thing are perhaps the locals, super chilled and I have the feeling they don’t give a damn of what you think of their precious city. Always a healthy sign.

Don’t expect to be entertained in here for days, but a little break in between in Boise wouldn’t hurt you or your sense for joy at all. Here’s where to go if you’ve only got a couple of hours (or are in dire need of catching some zzz’s after an intense outdoor trip, just like me)!

Freak Alley Gallery

If there’s only one thing you can see in Boise make it to this open-air museum in the alley between N. 8th Street and N. 9th Street, near Idaho Street.

The Freak Alley Gallery is an amazing collection of large-scale street art of local artists. It’s fun to see the different styles throughout the area. Some of the paintings – most of them are spray paints – are provoking, some will make you laugh, some are a bit mystical. And apparently – as with all street art outings – they often change in outlook. So changes are high that if you run into this wall again after a couple of months it has total different collection.

Freak Alley Gallery for sure is like a hidden gem, one that definitely adds a bit of a colourful edge to the downtown Boise streets!

Sooo… Get Ur Freak On.

Rediscovered Bookhouse

I accidentally stepped into this cosy little bookshop on Idaho Str. and I instantly loved it. I’m not sure why. I mean I love all bookshops, but this one doesn’t have the outlook of a “beauty & the beast library” that you often find in those “Most Beautiful Libraries” list, but I guess it’s just the vibe in here that made me want to stay for hours.

I discovered that the place also often hosts literary events and book releases and that the Bookhouse tries to publish 2 or 3 books from local writers per year. Seems about right therefore that Popsugar listed Rediscovered Bookhouse as one of the best independent bookstores in the USA. Give it a go.

Idaho State Capitol

A block or two from the edgy Freak Alley you can find the majestic dome of the Idaho State Capitol. This replica of the U.S. Capitol in Washington DC makes for a neat contrast.

The Capitol is perhaps Boise’s most iconic building and it’s interiors are worth a look upon as well. You can just enter the building for free which make it easy to visit. Tour the rotunda, the House and the Senate Chambers if you like. On the bottom floor you can watch a video and some more historical displays for information too.

In front of the classic statehouse there’s a replica of the Liberty Bell. Don’t leave without swinging it!

Bittercreek Alehouse

Despite the many information provided by our Airbnb host, he only gave us one recommendation for food: Bittercreek Alehouse. It kind of felt therefore this place was a must for the evening. We figured this place is a favourite indeed, if only because of the wide selection of beer is, with many local brews on tap.

The beer alone would indeed a reason to come here, but the lively atmosphere, the lovely patio (great for people watching) and comfort food might even be better. Spicy thai chicken, greek pita, steak salad with blue cheese and juicy lamb burgers; it’s all in here and the menu stars quite some veggie options too. We had a platter with trout and all kinds of sides and it was awesome and huge!

Get in here early, as the happy hour applies as well to food! Plus, you’ll be there before the (local) crowds :)!

So that’s that! Enjoy your time in the cosy capital of Idaho!

Ow and one last thing.

Stay alert, wildlife is all around in Boise. Look at this gorgeous praying mantis for example – we just found it right outside the door of our Airbnb!
