PHOTOS: a visual diary of Cahuita in Costa Rica

Life in the Caribbean town of Cahuita is slow and though tourism is developing on the eastern shores of Costa Rica, it doesn’t feel like it’s touching upon the laidback vibe of the area. The fishing village of Cahuita is one of the three main hubs people usually want to visit while discovering the Caribbean side, together with Tortuguero and Puerto Viejo. Still, the town seems to remain its irresistible charm.

The main attraction of Cahuita is its National Park, which is my favourite park in the country by far and free as well – apart from a voluntary donation – to enter (where else can one find that in Costa Rica?!). People do not necessarily come to this side of Costa Rica for the wildlife, but if you’re a big fan of mother nature, this park has a LOT to offer you as well.

In the mood to do good? In that case, visit a rescue center, a win-win situation for both since you get to see a lot of Costa Rican animals and your money will be well spent on them. My favourite rescue center – without a doubt – is Tree of Life. The animals live in large cages that are situated in a gorgeous, lush botanical garden. Not only will you learn a lot about them and their stories, most likely you’ll also discover a thing or two regarding spices and fruits. And yes, they often have sloths in here too.

Other things you can do out here is chilling out at Playa Negra (Black Beach), snorkelling the sea in front of the national park with a guide, staying in a beautiful tree house, visiting a medicinal garden or horse riding on the beach.
