A blog with a tiny travel dog

PHOTOS: The art of hammocking on Isla Holbox

A two hour drive plus a half an hour boat ride away from Cancún, you find a world that is far-fetched from the resort life of the ‘Riviera Maya’: Isla Holbox. A friend recently asked me what a nice spot in México would be for a few days on the beach in a hammock and this spot instantly popped up in my mind. Isla Holbox is thé-to-go-be-kind-unwind spot.

Holbox is basically a small village on a huge and very green island. You won’t find cars and big shopping malls in here (hallelujah), but in return you’ll be rewarded for your journey with clear waters (at one time we could even see a stingray floating 100 meters in front of us!), swing that launch you right into the ocean, a flamboyance if you’re lucky (a flock of flamingo’s – fancy word right?), local seafood shacks where they grill the freshly caught fish right in front of your nose, the bioluminescence phenomenon at night ánd if you’re in the right season you might even see a whale shark. Sounds pretty sweet right?

It’s not for everyone, but if you enjoy the feeling of a laid-back village then this is your stop in México baby. Also, ‘hammocking’ is a real occupation on Holbox. So try to master it as soon as you set foot on the island. There’s really little to do in here and as soon as you pick up the pace of the island, you’ll get the hang of it. Yes, literally that is.

Right now Holbox remains a little untouched. But with the upcoming age of mass tourism, you can just feel that change is in the air. Give it another ten years and this place will have been doubled in size (because people such as myself promote it :)). But for now, enjoy the tranquility and the clear waters of what this little gem in the north of the Peninsula has to offer! And these shots :).

More info about where to eat and what to do (besides hammocking) is coming up!

Here’s where to find that slice of paradise:
