Autumn is coming: in Prague- part II

Autumn is without a doubt the most perfect timing to travel to Prague, if you have – just like me – an irreplaceable sense of nostalgia for all things fall. Within a couple of weeks it will be the prime time again of the magnificent foliage in the Czech capital. From early October onwards leaves shift their color palette from yellow to orange and red before slowly falling. They turn the already charming cobblestones streets into small fairytales.

I was able to live exactly one month in Prague during this season and I honestly still think a lot about those pretty, pretty days. Why? Well, the foliage creates an aura throughout each neighbourhood, the air is light, chilled and crisp, breath forms little cloud puffs in the cold night air, the statues on the Carl Bridge shine even softer in the golden hour light, the swans in the river Vltava swim every morning through sheets of mist, the traditional Czech dishes taste even better when the cold steps in, pumpkin spice everything is to be found everywhere, so are the pretzels and gingerbread cookies, the area around the castle is even more magical by dark and you can share all of this with fewer tourists (hotels are a bit less expensive too in this season). Not convinced yet? If you come in November you can also already taste a bit of the Christmas atmosphere throughout town.

So pack your coat and gloves and go for a hike through one of the many parks; Letná, Divoká Šárka, and Stromovka for example. My forever favourite is Petřín park. I came there a lot, since I used to live next to it. The colour show is best to be seen amongst the ruins near the Hunger Wall. Next you should walk all the way through the apple orchards – fill your pockets underway with the fruits like the locals do- to the ‘little Eiffel tower’, the lookout station of the park. Primeval forests out of town, such as Jizera Mountains, Javorina and Beskydy are worth a visit too. If you have a favourite foliage place yourself or need some more tips, let me know!
